Every photo a modern iPhone takes is, by default, an HEIC file. Most people only discover this when a photo refuses to open on a Windows PC or gets rejected by an upload form. Here is what the format actually is, and how to live with it.

What HEIC Does Better

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores images compressed with HEVC — the same technology behind H.265 video. Compared with JPG it delivers:

  • Roughly half the file size at the same visual quality. A 4 MB JPG scene lands around 1.7–2.2 MB as HEIC.
  • Better gradients. 10-bit color support means smoother skies and less banding.
  • Extras JPG can't store: live photos, depth maps, bursts and an alpha channel, all inside one container.

For photos that stay inside the Apple ecosystem — iPhone, iCloud, Mac — HEIC is simply better, and there's no reason to change the default camera setting.

Where HEIC Falls Over

Compatibility, not quality, is HEIC's weakness:

  • Windows needs codec extensions that many corporate PCs don't have.
  • Countless websites, government portals, CMSs and printing kiosks accept only JPG or PNG.
  • Older versions of Photoshop, office suites and photo frames simply can't read it.

The Practical Rule

Shoot HEIC, share JPG. Keep the efficient format for storage, and convert copies to JPG at the moment a file has to leave your ecosystem — for an email attachment, a web upload, a client delivery.
