Why PNG files get huge
PNG is lossless and ideal for logos, icons and screenshots with sharp edges. But for photographs, that losslessness means enormous files — JPG or WebP will be a fraction of the size with no visible quality loss.
How to shrink it
- Photo in a PNG? Convert it to JPG with the tool below — expect 70-90% smaller.
- Need transparency? Keep PNG but run it through the compressor, or convert to WebP which supports alpha at smaller sizes.
Tips
- If the image has no transparent areas, JPG is almost always the right call.
- Screenshots of text stay crisper as PNG; photos do not.
